ECE Research Seminar Series: Dr. Yusheng Bian, Director and Distinguished Member of Technical Staff – GlobalFoundries

November 5 @ 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Advancing Optical Connectivity with 300-mm CMOS Silicon Photonics

Abstract:
The rapid growth of AI and high-performance computing is driving increasing demands for bandwidth, energy efficiency, and scalable optical connectivity. Silicon photonics offers a compelling path to address these challenges by combining high-performance photonic technologies with the manufacturing scale and process control of the semiconductor industry. This talk will provide a foundry perspective on advances in 300-mm CMOS silicon photonics, highlighting fiber-chip interfaces, high-speed modulators and photodetectors, passive and polarization-management devices. Particular attention will be given to scalable optical I/O for pluggable, NPO and CPO applications, including low-loss fiber coupling, detachable optical interfaces, wafer-level test, and advanced packaging approaches. The talk will also discuss how photonic devices, optical I/O, packaging, test, and manufacturing can be co-optimized to translate innovation into scalable technologies for future computing and communication systems.
