SUMMARY:CBE Seminar Series: Daniel J. Miller
DESCRIPTION:Daniel J. MillerSenior Research ScientistSchlumberger-Doll Research Center \n\n\n\nAn industrial perspective on membrane research\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPolymeric membranes are an energy-efficient alternative to thermally driven separation processes. Natural gas processing is one of the largest industrial markets for gas separation membranes. Virtually all natural gas must be treated to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) before entering a pipeline\, as these acid gases can corrode the pipeline in the presence of water. Cellulose triacetate (CTA) asymmetric hollow fiber membranes are effective for removal of acid gases from natural gas\, although they are subject to plasticization and limitations on process conditions. While thousands of experimental materials—some with remarkable separation characteristics—have been proposed as alternatives\, few have reached commercialization and legacy materials such as CTA continue to dominate. This presentation will provide an overview of ongoing industrial membrane research for natural gas processing. Current needs in membrane material science will be discussed. Because membrane modules operate within an ecosystem of other system components\, the impact of membrane material properties will be contextualized among cost drivers in natural gas processing. Finally\, the role of modeling will be explored\, including prediction of module performance from laboratory-scale transport measurements\, which can then be used to direct material discovery efforts to shorten time to commercialization.

SUMMARY:MS&E Seminar Series: Professor Sang-Gook Kim\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Mechanical Engineering
DESCRIPTION:UW-Madison Department of Materials Science and Engineering welcomes Professor Sang-Gook Kim. His seminar\, “Structured Multi-Agent Architecture for Truly Smart Manufacturing”\, will take place on Thursday\, October 22 from 1-2 p.m. in MSE 265. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nSang-Gook Kim is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. He received his B.S. from Seoul National University (1978)\, his M.S. from KAIST (1980)\, and his Ph.D. from MIT (1985). He held positions at Axiomatics Co. in Cambridge\, MA (1986) and at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (1986–1991). He later served as a corporate executive director at Daewoo Corporation in Korea\, where he directed the Central Research Institute of Daewoo Electronics before joining MIT in 2000. His research interests include piezoelectric MEMS energy harvesting and additive manufacturing\, nano engineered energy conversion devices\, ideal solar absorbers\, and\, more recently\, AI for design and manufacturing. He is a Fellow of CIRP (International Academy for Production Engineering) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)\, and an overseas member of the Korean National Academy of Engineering. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nThe materials science tetrahedron\, introduced by Prof. M. Fleming in 1989\, links processing\, structure\, properties\, and performance as a foundational framework for materials and manufacturing. Manufacturing activities span all four facets\, transforming raw materials into functional products while meeting targets for quality\, cost\, and production rate at scale. This interconnected complexity makes the realization of agile\, truly smart manufacturing systems inherently challenging. Advances in digitalization\, automation\, and cyber-physical systems—such as digital twins—have laid important groundwork. However\, achieving truly smart manufacturing requires orchestration layer that seamlessly integrates human decision-makers (and their rationale) with machines\, processes\, and enterprise operations across the enterprise. \n\n\n\nAgentic AI enables this transformation through autonomous reasoning and decision-making\, with adaptive optimization currently focused on the unit machine and process levels. Without a structured architectural framework\, however\, individual AI agents soon risk severe fragmentation\, with limited interoperability\, explainability\, and scalability across organizational silos. A structured reasoning and coordination layer is therefore essential to enable scalable and reliable agentic AI in manufacturing. It defines interfaces\, constraints\, decision rights\, and coupling rules while ensuring transparency\, robustness\, and upgradability. Such a framework can transform numerous AI agents into auditable\, reusable\, and portable assets aligned with enterprise goals\, including quality\, cost\, sustainability\, resilience\, and safety. \n\n\n\nThis talk addresses two key challenges: designing this coordination layer architecture and enabling reasoning–rationale elicitation. By capturing what agents (also human experts) decide\, why\, and with what evidence and uncertainty\, organizations can preserve traceability\, safety\, maintainability\, and strategic control while deploying agentic AI ecosystems effectively at scale over time.

SUMMARY:CBE Seminar Series: Susan Daniel
DESCRIPTION:Susan DanielDistinguished ProfessorDepartment of Chemical and Biomolecular EngineeringCornell University \n\n\n\nToward objective pain monitoring and treatment: Cell-free biosensors based on nociceptive ion channels\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEffectively monitoring and managing pain remain major challenges in the clinic and constitute active areas of research today. Given the subjective nature of the pain response and the ongoing opioid crisis\, there is a critical need to both identify new non-opioid drug targets for chronic pain management and provide more objective ways to measure pain. Using pain receptors themselves to monitor biomarkers of pain and screen potential channel blockers remains challenging\, with current drug screening protocols lacking quantitative and direct measures of receptor function and dysfunction. To improve the treatment and measurement of pain\, we describe here the development of prototypical pain biosensors. We utilize in vitro transcription and translation cell-free methods to rapidly express and integrate two distinct and pharmacologically relevant types of pain receptors into membrane-based sensing platforms: the Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel and pro-algesic P2X purinergic receptors (P2X2)\, avoiding all the downsides of cell-based expression\, isolation\, and reconstitution into membranes and sensor platforms. Because these receptors are ligand-gated ion channels activated by different stimuli\, we then assess both channels’ responsiveness using electrical or optical methods to monitor changes in ionic flux across the membranes. \n\n\n\nIn our first system\, we show that devices containing P2X2 receptors show an increase in ionic flux following ATP administration\, indicating ligand-gated channel opening. This ion flux is abolished in the presence of a known P2X2 inhibitor\, but not the P2X7 inhibitor\, demonstrating the screening potential of this platform to identify new subtype specific therapeutics for pain management. Using the same in vitro expression system\, we then cell-free synthesized and integrated the human nociceptor TRPV1 channels into membrane vesicles containing a fluorescence-based ion flux reporter. In these vesicles TRPV1 channel opening could be stimulated by two distinct pain-causing stimuli – heat and capsaicin\, showing that in our minimal system\, this receptor subtype is responsive to distinct channel activators. The modular nature of these two platforms enables isolation and assessment of individual pain receptors in a way that is not possible using native cells in a convenient\, tailorable device compatible with rapid\, high throughput screening. Both electrical and optical platforms\, which contain cell free synthesized pain receptors\, provide new ways to study receptor function and advance our detection and treatment of pain.

SUMMARY:NEEP Seminar Series: Ericmoore Jossou\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:NEEP Seminar SeriesThursdays12:00 – 1:00 PM106 Engineering Research BuildingPlease contact office@neep.wisc.edu for assistance with remote participation. In Situ and operando X-ray imaging of microstructural evolution in nuclear materialsX-ray imaging techniques including tomography\, and diffraction-based mapping offer powerful\, non-destructive means to probe the structural evolution of nuclear fuels and reactor materials under the extreme conditions relevant to their service life\, including high temperature\, irradiation\, and corrosive environments. This talk will discuss the application of synchrotron-based X-ray methods to visualize microstructural changes in fuels and structural alloys during fabrication\, hightemperature exposure\, irradiation\, and corrosion\, capturing phenomena such as porosity evolution\, phase transformations\, crack initiation and propagation\, swelling\, and corrosion-induced degradation. By enabling in situ and operando observation\, often coupled with complementary techniques such as thermal and mechanical loading\, these approaches provide direct insight into degradation mechanisms and performance-limiting behaviors that are difficult to access through post-irradiation/corrosion examination alone. Examples will highlight how time-resolved and spatially-resolved X-ray imaging is advancing the understanding of microstructure-property relationships in nuclear materials\, informing both fundamental materials science and the development of improved\, more radiation- and corrosion-tolerant fuel and structural material designs for current and next-generation reactor systems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEricmoore Jossou is the John Clark Hardwick (1986) Professor in Nuclear Science and Engineering\, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT\, where he leads the Materials in Extreme Environments Group. Before joining MIT\, he was a staff scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering\, with a concentration in Materials Science\, in 2019 from the University of Saskatchewan. Jossou is a recipient of the 2026 NSF CAREER Award and the 2026 Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching\, recognizing his contributions to research and engineering education\, respectively. Jossou’s lab combines experiments with computational methods to establish structure-properties-performance relationships in materials for nuclear energy applications. His current research includes machine learning–assisted fabrication and evaluation of U-Zr alloys under normal and off-normal reactor conditions using real-time X-ray imaging; machine learning–assisted quantum mechanical modeling of aliovalent dopant effects on UO2 fuel sintering kinetics; development of machine learning interatomic potentials for variable charge states in actinide oxides; and in situ/operando monitoring of irradiation-assisted corrosion in light water reactor chemistry.

SUMMARY:CBE Seminar Series: Sarah Perry
DESCRIPTION:Sarah PerryGary R. Lapidus ProfessorDepartment of Chemical and Biomolecular EngineeringUniversity of Massachusetts Amherst \n\n\n\nPolyelectrolyte Complex Materials\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElectrostatic interactions can be used in the self-assembly of a wide range of responsive\, bioinspired soft materials ranging from dehydrated thin films\, fibers\, and bulk solids to dense\, polymer-rich liquid complex coacervates\, as well as more complex hierarchical structures such as micelles and hydrogels. This responsiveness can include swelling and dissolution or solidification\, which can be harnessed to facilitate encapsulation and the subsequent fabrication of functional materials. We draw inspiration from biomolecular condensates\, which utilize liquid-liquid phase separation to create transient compartments in cells. These condensates form due to weak\, multivalent interactions involving intrinsically disordered proteins\, and have been shown to enable the selective uptake of specific proteins\, nucleic acids\, and small molecule drugs. We study how the patterning or presentation of charges and other chemical functionalities can modulate the potential for liquid-liquid phase separation via complex coacervation. We further examine how the distribution of charge on proteins and viruses can be used to facilitate selective uptake into coacervate phases\, and stabilization against denaturation. This molecular-level understanding of polyelectrolyte complexation is further enhanced by detailed dynamic mechanical and thermodynamic examinations of the molecular nature of the various material transitions present in these systems. Our experimental efforts are supported by the parallel development of computational approaches for modeling and predicting the phase behavior of patterned polymeric materials. \n\n\n\nOur goal is to establish molecular-level design rules to facilitate the tailored creation of materials based on polyelectrolyte complexation that can both illuminate self-assembly phenomena found in nature and find utility across a wide range of real-world applications.

SUMMARY:MS&E Seminar Series: Professor Pinshane Y. Huang\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Materials Science and Engineering
DESCRIPTION:UW-Madison Department of Materials Science and Engineering welcomes Professor Pinshane Y. Huang. Her seminar\, “Building a new era of atom-by-atom materials characterization with electron ptychography”\, will take place on Thursday\, November 5 from 1-2 p.m. in MSE 265. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nPinshane Y. Huang is a Professor and Racheff Faculty Scholar in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the MaterialsResearch Laboratory at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. Pinshane holds a Ph.D. in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University\, and B.A in Physics from Carleton College. Her research is focused on transmission electron microscopy and ptychography of two-dimensional and nanoelectronic materials. She has been recognized for both her research (PECASE\, Packard Fellowship\, Sloan Fellowship\, Burton Medal from the Microscopy Society of America) and teaching (Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching\, Rose Award for Teaching Excellence\, Illinois Student Government Teaching Excellence Award). \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nElectron microscopy and atomic-scale materials characterization are undergoing a revolution fueled by the new capabilities of electron ptychography\, which is setting records for spatial resolution down to 20 picometers. In this talk\, I will discuss how my group is developing atomically precise methods tocharacterize materials using electron ptychography\, and the new science we are accessing using these new capabilities. These projects span from using ptychography to visualize thermal vibrations atom-by-atom to recovering 3D atomic coordinates of 2D moiré materials from a single projection. In addition\, we are making cutting-edge techniques of advanced electron microscopy more accessible by using ptychography to achieve 0.44 angstrom spatial resolution in a conventional scanning transmission electron microscope\, nearly quadrupling its intrinsic optical resolution. We demonstrate that expensive aberration correctors are no longer required to achieve atom-by-atom imaging\, a significant step towards democratizing access to high-end electron microscopy.

SUMMARY:CBE Seminar Series: Zhen Ma
DESCRIPTION:Zhen MaAssociate ProfessorDepartment of Biomedial and Chemical EngineeringSyracuse University \n\n\n\nAt the crossroads of new approach methodologies and artificial intelligence\n\n\n\nZhen Ma Portrait\n\n\n\nThe convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) platforms is redefining in vitro biological models. Advances in hiPSC-derived three-dimensional cardiac organoids\, engineered heart tissues\, and heart-on-chip systems have improved physiological relevance but generate high-dimensional\, multimodal datasets that exceed the capacity of traditional analytical approaches. In this seminar\, I will discuss how emerging computational approaches\, including machine learning\, deep learning\, and generative AI\, can unlock the full potential of engineered cardiac models. By integrating AI with in vitro cardiac models\, we demonstrate how data-driven approaches can enable scalable quality control\, reveal subtle disease phenotypes\, and guide rational model design. Together\, these advances position AI as a powerful co-pilot in cardiac research\, accelerating cardiotoxicity screening\, improving disease modeling\, and informing the next generation of intelligent cardiac organoids.
