SUMMARY:BME Seminar Series: Jeff Saucerman
DESCRIPTION:Iterating experiments and network modeling towards precision cardiology\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeff Saucerman\, PhDProfessor of Biomedical EngineeringProfessor of Cardiovascular MedicineUniversity of Virginia \n\n\n\nAbstract:Cardiac hypertrophy can be adaptive with exercise but becomes harmful due to gene mutations or heart attacks\, leading to heart failure. This complexity makes it hard to understand and target the molecular networks involved. In this study\, we identified a patient with a unique mutation in MYBPC3 associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy\, which we recapitulated in a knock-in mouse model. Next\, a computational network model predicted that MYBPC3 mutation-induced hypertrophy is mitigated by the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin\, which we validated in cell culture\, the MYBPC3 mutant mouse model\, and in two observational patient cohorts. This study illustrates how iteration between clinic\, network models\, and experimental validation can guide precision therapies. \n\n\n\nPrint PDF

SUMMARY:CBE Seminar Series: Nick Sahinidis
DESCRIPTION:Nick SahinidisProfessorDepartment of Industrial & Systems Engineering and Chemical & Biomolecular EngineeringGeorgia Institute of Technology \n\n\n\nData-driven Optimization for Materials Discovery: Benchmarks and Case Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelf-driving laboratories can compress years of materials discovery into weeks. Instead of relying on trial-and-error\, they use algorithms to learn from each experiment and decide what to try next. When experiments are expensive and budgets are limited\, choosing the next experiment well can have a large impact on the quality of the material ultimately discovered. \n\n\n\nI will present results from a recent benchmark of 46 data-driven optimization solvers on 502 problems\, ranging from one to 300 dimensions and spanning a wide variety of mathematical behavior. Our new branch-and-model (BAM) algorithm achieves the highest overall success rate\, outperforming several Bayesian optimizers as well as stochastic and deterministic derivative-free optimization solvers. \n\n\n\nI will then show how branch-without-bound algorithms work in practice. In one example\, an algorithm guided experiments on perovskite solar cells\, jointly optimizing six processing parameters across three layers of the cell. I will also share results from optimizing digital twins and simulators developed by the self-driving-labs community. \n\n\n\nFinally\, I will discuss opportunities in batteries\, semiconductors\, catalysts\, polymeric membranes\, and biomolecules\, and how deterministic methods such as BAM can help scientists discover better materials faster.

SUMMARY:MS&E and ECE Special Research Seminar: Llewellyn West Jones\, Jr. Professor Hong Tang\, Yale University
DESCRIPTION:The UW-Madison Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering welcome Llewellyn West Jones\, Jr. Professor Hong Tang. His seminar\, “Hybrid Superconducting Photonic Circuits”\, will take place on Thursday\, October 8 from 1-2 p.m. in MSE 265. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nHong Tang is the Llewellyn West Jones Jr. Professor of Electrical Engineering and Physics at Yale University. His research explores integrated photonics and quantum systems\, with interests spanning nonlinear optics\, optomechanics\, superconducting detectors\, and microwave-to-optical transduction. His group develops new materials\, devices\, and architectures for quantum communication and information processing. Tang is a recipient of the Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering and a Fellow of Optica. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nSuperconducting and photonic circuits are among the most advanced platforms for quantum information processing. However\, superconductivity and optics are incompatible in many aspects as superconductors could absorb photons and optical excitations are known to lead to excess microwave noises. I will present an ongoing effort at Yale that brings superconductivity and optics on a single chip platform\, which enables new functions including ultrasensitive photon-number resolved detectors\, efficient microwave-to-optical converters for quantum networks\, and superconducting electro-optic modulators for cryogenic data links.

SUMMARY:ME 903 Graduate Seminar: Larry Ilcewicz
DESCRIPTION:The ME 903: Graduate Student Lecture Series features campus and visiting speakers who present on a variety of research topics in the field of mechanical engineering. Dr. Larry Ilcewicz is the Chief Scientist and Technical Advisor\, Advanced Composite Materials at the Federal Aviation Administration. \n\n\n\nPresentation Title: Engineering Practices for Composite Aircraft Structural Damage Tolerance and Aging Resistance \n\n\n\nAbstract: This seminar will cover damage tolerance and aging principles for composite and bonded aircraft structures\, including the associated design\, structural substantiation\, and maintenance practices. The importance of stringent material and process controls applied in production and field repair will also be emphasized. Polymer composite aircraft structural applications have generally had a very good service history\, indicating that structures can be designed\, repeatably manufactured\, and safely maintained for the life of each aircraft\, based on proven certification practices. Damage threats\, environmental effects\, and degradation mechanisms have been studied to develop material screening methods\, design guidelines & criteria\, manufacturing quality controls\, and structural analysis & test protocol for certification. Over 50 years of applications\, certified composite aircraft structures have demonstrated environmental & mechanical fatigue resistance and operational damage tolerance\, aligned with existing industry maintenance practices. \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Larry Ilcewicz is the FAA Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Composite Materials. He started work with the FAA in 1998 and has supported many certification activities for small airplanes\, rotorcraft\, and transport aircraft. He has also worked on major accident investigations and service problems involving composites. These experiences helped Larry develop and execute an international plan for composite safety and certification initiatives to work with industry\, academia\, and other civil aviation authorities to develop composite regulatory guidance\, training\, and standardization. \n\n\n\nLarry came to the FAA from The Boeing Company\, where he worked 17 years on various commercial transport aircraft programs. This included support to 737\, 757\, 767 and 777 aircraft in various stages of development\, production\, and service. He has authored/co-authored more than 90 technical publications. He served as co-chairman for Composite Materials Handbook 17\, CMH-17\, for more than 25 years. He won the U.S. Presidential Rank Award in 2013. In 2019\, he received the AIAA Crichlow Prize\, which led to an invitation to give the 2020 Structures\, Structural Dynamics\, and Materials (SDM) Lecture\, which was a basis for some of the content in this seminar. Related references will be noted throughout the seminar for participants interested in gaining advanced knowledge on the subjects.
