SUMMARY:ECE Discovery Panel: ECE Named Degree Options - Semiconductor engineering or machine learning & data science
DESCRIPTION:Engineering undergraduates! Join us in 2317 Engineering Hall as faculty members explain how you can specialize in emerging technologies such as semiconductor engineering or machine learning and data science and earn a named option on your transcript. The option uses 20 of the elective credits within the 120-credit Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering BS degree program to focus on the science\, tools\, and practices associated with either semiconductor engineering or machine learning and data science. \n\n\n\nAll undergraduate students are welcome as Associate Teaching Professor Eduardo Arvelo\, Assistant Teaching Professor Setareh Behroozi\, and Teaching Faculty Srdjan Milicic discuss the advantages of choosing a named option. This session is a great opportunity to learn about courses in these areas and where this knowledge can take you. \n\n\n\nCome for the insights\, bring your questions\, and stay for the sandwiches! \n\n\n\n\n\nEduardo Arvelo\n\n\n\n\n\nSetareh Behroozi\n\n\n\n\n\nSrdjan Milicic

SUMMARY:CBE Seminar Series: Ying Diao
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ying DiaoDepartment of Chemical and Biomolecular EngineeringUniversity of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAI-guided Closed-loop Learning for Functional Molecule Discovery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClosed-loop discovery of functional molecules represents a new paradigm to new materials discovery. However\, so far\, AI-driven closed-loop discovery approaches have rarely yielded new chemical insight. I am leading a team to address this challenge under the Molecule Maker Lab Institute\, one of the first AI Institutes in US. We connect autonomous synthesis\, autonomous device printing and testing\, and machine learning in a closed loop to drive molecular design of light harvesting small molecules towards high photostability. We combined blind Bayesian Optimization (BO) with physics-based ML models to expand the classical “closed loop optimization” method for a more informative “Closed-Loop Transfer” (CLT) paradigm capable of making scientific discoveries We uncovered a first principles understanding of the molecular determinants of photostability in which the triplet excited state manifold plays a critical role against literature findings. We further applied this strategy to understanding molecular design rules underpinning chiral emergence of conjugated polymers. Such understanding laid the foundation to developing next generation chiral electronics spanning solar cells\, conductors\, spintronics and beyond. At present\, we are working to partner Large Language Model with our closed-loop learning approach towards developing a chemical language model for organic electronics.

Prolonged exposure to these extremes leads to material degradation that is ultimately driven by the formation of defects and disorder. This presentation summarizes recent efforts to use state-of-the-art analytical tools that have become recently available at large user facilities\, such as the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, to uniquely characterize nuclear materials. It will be shown that coupled X-ray and neutron total scattering experiments can provide unique insights into the local defect structure of fuel-type materials (e.g.\, UO2) and wasteform ceramics (e.g.\, A2B2O7 pyrochlore oxides). In almost all cases it was apparent that the formation of defects and disorder\, and associated thermal recovery\, is much more complex than previously though with distinct processes occurring over different length scales and sublattices in the material.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaik Lang is a Professor and Pietro F. Pasqua Fellow in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Heidelberg (Germany) in 2004. He spent time as a postdoctoral researcher at the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research (Darmstadt\, Germany) and at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor\, USA). In August of 2013\, he joined the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Lang performs research in the field of disordered materials and investigates the behavior of materials under extreme environments\, including energetic ion irradiation\, high pressure and high temperature. He applies advanced materials characterization techniques that are available at user facilities\, such as the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is involved with several research projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

SUMMARY:MS&E Seminar Series: Dr. Daniel B. Miracle\, Air Force Research Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:UW-Madison Department of Materials Science and Engineering welcomes Dr. Daniel B. Miracle. His seminar\, “Commercial Alloys Through a High-Entropy Lens”\, will take place on Thursday\, October 15 from 1-2 p.m. in MSE 265. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nDr. Dan Miracle served for 48 years in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory\, including 24 years as a Senior Scientist. His research has covered nickel-based superalloys and intermetallic compounds; metal matrix composites; advanced aluminum alloys; and boron-modified titanium alloys. His current research explores metallic glasses and high-entropy alloys. \n\n\n\nDr. Miracle received a B.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Wright State University\, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from The Ohio State University\, and an Honorary Doctor of Science from the Institute of Metal Physics\, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Miracle is a Fellow of ASM\, International; The Minerals\, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the Air Force Research Laboratory. He is an Honorary Member of the Indian Institute of Metals and has received the Air Force Basic Research Award and the Presidential Rank Award. He is author or co-author of over 240 peer- reviewed articles and 7 book chapters\, and is co- editor of 6 books. He has given over 220 plenary\, keynote and invited talks around the world. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nAfter over 20 years of intense study\, there is not yet a compelling high entropy alloy (HEA) application. To explain this\, we hypothesize that a major fraction of HEAs are compositionally similar to many commercial alloys\, especially those based on 3d transition metals. We explore this hypothesis by characterizing commercial alloys from a high entropy perspective – we calculate their ideal configurational entropy and lattice distortion. We also calculate the compositional distances between nearly 1500 commercial alloys and HEAs. We conclude that the HEAs studied to date have not displaced commercial alloys because many of the former have sufficient compositional similarity to the latter. We also show that three principal elements are sufficient to achieve exceptional properties\, and that one of those elements typically reach concentrations as high as 75 at.%. To guide future work\, we highlight compositional areas as yet untouched by both conventional alloys and the HEA approach.
